Discovering Passion and Leadership Through Travel

Updated: Jul 6, 2024

When people ask about my favorite travel destination or which country I love most, I struggle to give just one answer. Each place holds unique memories, much like different periods of our lives. Some moments we cherish, others we endure, but each contributes to our journey.

Reflecting on my travels, one of my most memorable experiences was in New Zealand, a country I adore for its stunning natural beauty and the genuine warmth of its people. Life there feels refreshingly uncomplicated, unburdened by excessive technology. During my visit to Greymouth on the South Island, I met a musician who also crafted jade sculptures. Intrigued, I asked why he didn't pursue a career in music despite his degree. He shared that while music lived in his heart, he chose jade sculpting because of his love for the stone. Each jade piece, he said, reveals its unique beauty with patience. His words resonated deeply with me and have become a guiding principle in my life.

Inspired by this philosophy of patience, I embarked on a half-day glacier hike in Franz Josef. Initially excited, I panicked upon seeing the towering ice mountain. I felt insignificant and wanted to back out, even asking the guide for a refund, which wasn’t possible. Instead, the guide assured me I could walk closely behind her for safety.

The hike to the glacier’s terminal face was a five-mile trek through ice holes and across icy hills. We held hands in treacherous spots, following our guide who used a hammer to carve our path. Despite the cold and exhaustion, turning back wasn't an option. Remembering the jade sculptor’s words about patience helped me persevere. Reaching the end, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. The guide awarded me a certificate as a glacier hiker, a tangible reminder of my journey.

This adventure taught me invaluable lessons about leadership and decision-making. Travel often presents us with unexpected challenges and uncertain situations, much like the workplace. Without courage, leadership, and precise judgment, we risk being overwhelmed by these obstacles. The jade sculptor's decision to follow his passion, despite the easier path of a music career, exemplifies the importance of choosing what we love and staying committed to it.

In today’s fast-paced world, we face different challenges but can still hold onto our passions. Through technology, we can accomplish extraordinary work, merging our interests with our skills. My glacier hike in New Zealand, inspired by the jade sculptor’s philosophy, reinforced that patience, passion, and leadership are essential to navigating both travel and life’s broader journey.

To help others find their passionate careers, I offer life planning and goal-setting training courses. These courses provide a structured approach to discovering what truly excites you and how to turn that passion into a fulfilling career. Additionally, my balanced leadership training uses natural systems to teach soft skills and decisive leadership. By understanding and applying these principles, you can become a balanced leader capable of making thoughtful, informed decisions in any situation.

I wholeheartedly encourage you to discover different places and immerse yourself in various cultures. Traveling allows you to engage with people, learn local lifestyles, and appreciate diverse perspectives. Understanding different cultures enriches both our personal and professional lives. In today’s diverse workplaces, cultural awareness fosters better communication, collaboration, and innovation. The best way to learn about culture is through direct experience. So, pack your bags, explore the world, and let travel teach you lessons that last a lifetime.
